LONG ISLAND – pink climbing rose – Orard

Step out after rain and let LONG ISLAND wrap your front garden in fragrance, its porcelain-pink rosettes carrying a strong, classic perfume along paths, fences and railings. This reliable climber offers season-long flowering on glossy, dark green foliage, creating a soft, “girly” welcome in compact London terraces while coping well with breezy, wetter spells and heavier garden soils common in the UK. Own-root planting supports long-term longevity, so if a stem is damaged it regrows from its own base, keeping the display stable and attractive for years. With a balanced, medium vigour reaching around 2.2–3.5 m, it is easy to train over arches, porches or along wires without overwhelming the space. Flowers repeat in generous flushes, with good remontancy so you can enjoy beautifully formed clusters well into autumn. In larger containers of at least 40–50 litres, it brings vertical impact to patios and balconies when combined with rainwater-saving watering habits. Year by year, you will notice roots establishing first, then stronger shoots, and by the third season a full presence of colour and perfume with only modest care, supporting a calmer, more sustainable garden rhythm.

Usage options

Target area Reasoning
Terraced-house front fence or railing The moderate, manageable vigour lets LONG ISLAND clothe a small front fence or railing without taking over the pavement, giving strong, classic scent right at nose level for passers-by and residents alike, perfect for busy urban garden owners.
Porch, doorway or narrow entrance arch Very full, porcelain-pink rosette blooms repeat reliably, so entrances stay romantic and welcoming across the season with relatively little pruning; train a few main stems and remove old clusters occasionally, ideal for beginners seeking beauty.
Rainwater-friendly large container on balcony or patio In a 40–50 litre peat-free container with good drainage, LONG ISLAND delivers long-lasting vertical colour and fragrance while you manage watering using stored rain, suiting smaller paved spaces and sustainable-minded city balcony gardeners.
Family seating area or garden path The strong, noticeable-from-a-distance perfume makes it perfect beside benches and narrow paths, where evening air carries the scent; medium maintenance means only light tying-in and deadheading, reassuring for relaxation-focused homeowners.
Warm, sheltered wall in typical UK conditions Clothing a sunny wall, its dense dark foliage and repeat-flowering clusters provide a lush backdrop while coping steadily with the UK’s mix of showers, wind and cooler spells, supporting resilient beauty for all-weather family gardeners.
Small pergola or rose arch feature The combination of controlled height and flexible stems makes training over a compact pergola straightforward, giving cascading pink trusses above head-height with moderate upkeep, attractive for design-conscious hobby gardeners.
Specimen focal point in mixed border Used as a single specimen, its glossy dark foliage and clustered, pastel-fading blooms create a long-season focal point, and the own-root form helps it recover if cut back hard, reassuring for longevity-minded gardeners.
Curtain of scent near windows or outdoor dining area Planted where air circulates gently, the intense fragrance drifts indoors and across dining spaces while moderate disease resistance and simple training keep care realistic, especially appealing for scent-loving urban families.

Styling ideas

  • Porcelain-arch – Train LONG ISLAND up a slim arch with lavender beneath for soft pink and blue tones and evening scent – ideal for small-family gardens wanting romance without complex upkeep.
  • Terrace-screen – Use along a front boundary with low nepeta edging to create a light, “girly” privacy screen – suited to London terraces aiming for charm in tight spaces.
  • Balcony-column – Grow in a 50 litre container with a slim obelisk, underplanting with dwarf sage for structure and drought-aware watering – great for sustainability-oriented balcony gardeners.
  • Dining-backdrop – Fan-train against a sunny wall by a patio table, combining with clematis viticella for layered colour – perfect for homeowners who entertain outdoors in summer.
  • Romantic-corner – Place as a specimen near a bench with creeping bugle as groundcover to soften the base and suppress weeds – appealing to beginners seeking a calm, low-fuss retreat.

Technical cultivar profile
Property Data
Name and registration LONG ISLAND Parfums de Lyon ® (ORAlinco; ORA 151-905) is a large-flowered climbing rose from the Parfums de Lyon collection, registered and introduced for garden and exhibition use in 2022.
Origin and breeding Bred by Pierre Orard at Roseraies Orard, Feyzin, France, around 2020, this variety was introduced and distributed by Roseraies Orard in 2022, continuing their tradition of fragrant climbing roses.
Growth and structural characteristics Climbing habit with 220–350 cm height and 80–130 cm spread, moderately thorny shoots and dense, glossy, dark green foliage; self-cleaning is partial, so some spent clusters benefit from manual removal.
Flower morphology Very full, rosette-shaped blooms with over 40 petals, produced mainly in clusters; extra-large flowers show good remontancy, with an abundant second flush and further repeats in favourable conditions.
Colour data and phenology Warm porcelain pink flowers; buds are pale, slightly silvery, opening vivid mid-pink inside, paler outside, then fading through pastel pink to almost white outer petals as the bloom ages on the plant.
Fragrance and aroma Very strongly scented with a sweet, classic rose perfume that is noticeable from a distance; well suited where fragrance is prioritised, such as near paths, doors, windows or frequently used seating areas.
Hip characteristics Occasional small hips, about 6–10 mm, spherical and red (RHS 42A); ornamental effect is modest, and the very full flowers limit pollination compared with single or semi-double rose varieties.
Resistance and winter hardiness Hardy to approximately −21 to −18 °C (RHS H7, USDA 6b, Swedish zone 3), with moderate resistance to black spot, powdery mildew and rust; appreciates good air circulation and balanced watering in warm spells.
Horticultural recommendations Best in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil; suitable for walls, fences, pergolas, large containers and cutting. Medium maintenance: tie in new shoots, prune after main flushes, and monitor pests and diseases.

LONG ISLAND Parfums de Lyon ® offers powerful fragrance, generous repeat flowering and manageable climbing growth on a durable own-root framework, making it a thoughtful long-term choice for your garden.

Information about the videos
The video series is not a “seasonal showcase”; it illustrates the essence of pharmaROSA® own-root cultivation in a tangible way: how the plant is built up, what the root system is like and how the shoot system regenerates. The recordings were therefore made at different times and with plants at various stages of development, so mixed foliage levels and differing stages of growth may appear in the videos. They are not a ‘sample’ of the batch dispatched, but a visual explanation of how the technology works. The current condition of the rose available to order — typical for the given period and similar to what you can expect to receive in the parcel — is shown in the upper part of the product page.
